“I thought you wanted your minions here to peel my skin off layer-by-layer.”

Sifro smiled. “That was just to get your attention. Did it work?”

“Uh, yeah,” I said. “Stuff like that generally does.” I glanced around before looking back at him. “Do you treat all your guests like this? Kidnap them and tell them they’re in for torture the likes of which they’ve never dreamed of before?”

“Not usually,” admitted Sifro. “Most times they just get bled dry and left for the desert to claim their bodies and turn them into dust.”

“That’s about what I expected.” The interior of the cave could have been a slaughterhouse for all I knew. “How many of them have even seen the inside of this place?”

“None of them. Until now.”

I glanced at Kris and could see the wheels moving in her head. What was Sifro’s angle on this? Why did he bring us here and why did he want me to finish the job? The answer was obvious, of course. He wanted me to take out his competition.

“Because you need me,” I said.

Sifro spread his arms. “Don’t mistake me, Declan. You’ve proven yourself capable of doing something that most humans would never be able to. That is impressive. And for the moment, it makes you unique. But don’t overestimate your worth to me. If it comes down to it, I can always find someone else.”

I smiled. “I doubt that very much. How many humans have you come across who took the fight right to the queen mother of all of you guys? I’m guessing that count is exactly one. Me.” I paused. “Now, you can try to play the whole ‘I hold all the cards’ thing, or we can get down to the bare bones of what you want done and what I want in return.”

Sifro’s right eyebrow jumped an inch. “What you want?”

“Absolutely. I don’t hire myself out for free.”

“But you were going to do it anyway.”

“Well, let’s just say that my moral code can be easily swayed by the promise of something good.”

Sifro squinted at me. “And what would you require?”“I don’t know yet. But I’ll get back to you on it.” I felt pretty confident at this point that Sifro wasn’t in the mood to bleed me dry, which was a good thing. “When do we leave?”

Sifro shook his head. “The girl stays with us here.”

“No way. She comes with me, that’s non-negotiable.”

“Do you think I’m a fool? If I let you both leave here, what guarantee do I have that you will complete the job?”

“None,” I said. “The same as me when we walk out of here and have to spend more nights out here in your territory. You could easily double-cross us and attack. So what protection do I have? Besides, Kris is my tracker. Without her, I have no clue where I’m headed.”

Sifro considered this. “I can tell you exactly where you need to go to find Isella. The mesa at la boca del Diablo is where she will head for the final part of her transformation.
