âI thought you wanted your minions here to peel my skin off layer-by-layer.â
Sifro smiled. âThat was just to get your attention. Did it work?â
âUh, yeah,â I said. âStuff like that generally does.â I glanced around before looking back at him. âDo you treat all your guests like this? Kidnap them and tell them theyâre in for torture the likes of which theyâve never dreamed of before?â
âNot usually,â admitted Sifro. âMost times they just get bled dry and left for the desert to claim their bodies and turn them into dust.â
âThatâs about what I expected.â The interior of the cave could have been a slaughterhouse for all I knew. âHow many of them have even seen the inside of this place?â
âNone of them. Until now.â
I glanced at Kris and could see the wheels moving in her head. What was Sifroâs angle on this? Why did he bring us here and why did he want me to finish the job? The answer was obvious, of course. He wanted me to take out his competition.
âBecause you need me,â I said.
Sifro spread his arms. âDonât mistake me, Declan. Youâve proven yourself capable of doing something that most humans would never be able to. That is impressive. And for the moment, it makes you unique. But donât overestimate your worth to me. If it comes down to it, I can always find someone else.â
I smiled. âI doubt that very much. How many humans have you come across who took the fight right to the queen mother of all of you guys? Iâm guessing that count is exactly one. Me.â I paused. âNow, you can try to play the whole âI hold all the cardsâ thing, or we can get down to the bare bones of what you want done and what I want in return.â
Sifroâs right eyebrow jumped an inch. âWhat you want?â
âAbsolutely. I donât hire myself out for free.â
âBut you were going to do it anyway.â
âWell, letâs just say that my moral code can be easily swayed by the promise of something good.â
Sifro squinted at me. âAnd what would you require?ââI donât know yet. But Iâll get back to you on it.â I felt pretty confident at this point that Sifro wasnât in the mood to bleed me dry, which was a good thing. âWhen do we leave?â
Sifro shook his head. âThe girl stays with us here.â
âNo way. She comes with me, thatâs non-negotiable.â
âDo you think Iâm a fool? If I let you both leave here, what guarantee do I have that you will complete the job?â
âNone,â I said. âThe same as me when we walk out of here and have to spend more nights out here in your territory. You could easily double-cross us and attack. So what protection do I have? Besides, Kris is my tracker. Without her, I have no clue where Iâm headed.â
Sifro considered this. âI can tell you exactly where you need to go to find Isella. The mesa at la boca del Diablo is where she will head for the final part of her transformation.
